All of the funded events listed below will take place at National Trust’s Hardcastle Crags. Directions by car or on foot from Hebden Bridge town centre can be found here.
These events are free thanks to funding from the Community Foundation For Calderdale. They are open to anyone living within the Calderdale area.
Family Day
Join us for a fun, family afternoon in the beautiful natural surroundings of NT Hardcastle Crags. This is a family event for children of any age accompanied by parents.
Expect cooking over a cosy campfire, song, stories, and craft activities.
Meet at 11.45 at the bookshelter close to the Midgehold Carpark at Hardcastle Crags.
This is an outdoor event. Be sure to wear sturdy walking boots and bring full waterproofs.
We will provide campfire doughnuts, a fire and crafts.
LGBTQ – Medicinal and Edible Mushrooms, and Fire Making
This course includes:
- An introduction to sustainably and safely foraging for edible and medicinal fungi in the wild
- A medicinal mushroom walk led by local herbalist, Ash Brachti of Hebden Herbs
- How to make fire using foraged material including a very special mushroom
- Using fungi for artistic purposes (the artist’s bracket mushroom makes an excellent canvas!) and as inspiration for creating our own art
- Cooking over the campfire. On the day we will prepare a medicinal mushroom drink using foraged ingredients.
This course will be led by Live Wild’s Leonie Morris and Rachael Taylor, and herbalist Ash Brachti of Hebden Herbs
Meet for 10.30am at the book shelter near the Midgehole carpark
This is an outdoor course, however there is an indoor alternative in case of bad weather
Community & Connection Focus: Introduction to Whittling
This course is for anyone who would like to learn a new skill, meet other people, and enjoy a restorative, relaxing day in a beautiful location.
This course includes:
– An introduction to the craft of whittling wood to make useful and decorative items
– An introduction to the safe use of hand tools including whittling knives
– Trying your hand at whittling decorative mushrooms inspired by the Mushroom Exhibition which will be on show at Hardcastle Crags
This course will be led by Live Wild’s Leonie Morris and Rachael Taylor
LGBTQ – Fire Skills
This course includes:
- How to safely make fire outside in any weather with consideration for your surroundings
- An exploration of natural materials that can be used for tinder, kindling and fuel
- An introduction to using tools such as axes and knives to split wood
- The honing of knife skills, including how to make ‘feather sticks’, which are very useful for fire lighting

Community & Connection Focus: Make your own Bark Containers
This course is open to anyone who would like to learn a new skill, meet other people, and enjoy a restorative, relaxing day in a beautiful location.
This course includes:
– An introduction to crafting with foraged willow bark
– Exploring the use of foraged materials such as nettle stems to make twine or string
– Crafting your own willow bark container from scratch
This course will be led by Live Wild’s Leonie Morris and Rachael Taylor
